Xbox 360

We knew it wouldn’t take long after Xbox 360 games had been cracked, but an actual Xbox 360 console has been hacked - as shown in the linked video. Just watching the 360 in the video load up an illegal copy of PDZ makes me feel uncomfortable. It really didn’t take long for the machine to be hacked - and it’s disappointing especially considering how hard Microsoft claimed it worked to prevent this sort of thing from happening.

Best Buy DocumentBased upon the linked retail memo, Best Buy is scheduled to received more Xbox 360 consoles sometime this week. And from the looks of it, consumers won’t have to camp out this time. If you’re interested in obtaining a machine, you pretty much have to be in the store when they put the machines on sale - and you’ve gotta be sure to let the employees know you’re looking for a 360. If they’ve got any on-hand, you’ll receive a voucher to obtain a machine. Click on the image to see a larger version.

So while you won’t need to camp out in front of your local Best Buy, if you want to secure a machine you may just have to wait around inside the store and continuously pester the store’s employees. Sweet!

IGN 2005 AwardsIGN recently posted its Best of 2005 Awards and honestly, we agree with most of the site’s choices. IGN’s broken the awards up by console and has created a whole slew of categories - it took a good amount of time just to see all of the different categories for each console. At any rate, a list of the big winners follows…

Xbox 360 HackedWell apparently the Xbox 360 has been hacked - it didn’t take long, did it? Some original Xbox owners have illegally modified their machines to run copies of videogames off of their hard-drives. As a result, these gamers would be able to save a good deal of money because they wouldn’t have to purchase games of their own - rather they’d just borrow a copy, copy it, and return it from wherever they got it.

When talking of the Xbox 360 throughout 2005, Microsoft announced it’s done everything it could to prevent similar illegal actions on the Xbox 360. Well, it looks like hackers have already found a way around Microsoft’s protection. According to news.com, some hackers have developed an extraction program that allows Xbox 360 titles to be ripped from their DVDs. However, simply being able to extract data from the 360 DVDs won’t do you much because according to the article, extracted files cannot be run yet. Of course hackers are working to cheat the system to make it so these extracted files do work. Similarly, Microsoft is working around the clock to prevent these hackers from attaining any success.

So who’s going to win? Well, as wrong as we feel playing illegal copies of games is, if the past is any indication, we’d say the hackers will break the system sooner or later. And that will probably happen sooner than any of us would expect.

HD-DVDMicrosoft has denied that it will release a HD-DVD compatible Xbox 360 in 2006. Releasing a new version of the 360 would certainly upset consumers who already put down cash on the currently available units. While it’d be great if the 360 did support a next-gen DVD format since the discs would be larger in size, it would ramp up the machine’s price. Additionally, with each passing day, it’s looking more and more like the Blu-Ray, will beat out HD-DVD to become the next-gen DVD standard.

Any thoughts on this?

Gear of War

Miss Zero Hour last month? If you did, you didn’t catch the amazing Gears of War video shown at the event. Lucky for you though, the video is currently being hosted by FileFront. Get clicking if you haven’t already seen it. Also, be aware that the footage contains violence and explicit language - so don’t show the kiddies and don’t open it at work.

Mission Impossible 3Just recently, Paramount Pictures unleashed the brand new Mission Impossible III trailer onto the Xbox Live Marketplace. The trailer is naturally available in 720p as well as 480p, just as the recently released X-Men 3 teaser trailer was. Both sequels hit theaters next May. It’s funny, the first next-gen gaming console has been released, and we’re using it substantially to download movie trailers, videogame demos, and cheap arcade games. We’re all for complete online integration though, so we’re loving it!

Splinter Cell Interview

On Wednesday, IGN posted a detailed interview with Daniel Roy, the associate producer of the Xbox 360 version of the new Splinter Cell title. The interview is definitely worth checking out if you have any interest in the game. Heck, the interview’s worth checking out if you’re interested at all in next-gen videogames. It’s looking like Double Agent is going to represent a big leap for the Splinter Cell series. Of course, we’d only expect a leap seeing as the series is moving into the next generation.

Want proof of how much more advanced the new game is going to be?

IGN: Are you planning any major changes to the A.I. concerning stealth? There was a significant difference between Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory.

Daniel Roy: One of the major overhauls this time around is the enemy AI in a friendly environment, i.e., the terrorist HQ. Terrorists in the HQ don’t automatically pull out a gun and shoot you, now… They interact with Sam in a more complex way. Some of them will even join him on missions in cooperative mode, so that Sam can benefit from a partner on certain missions.

Oh and yeah, the game has the graphics thing going for it as well.
